Books and manuals
The manual that taught me more than any other is: "Flash 4 for Windows and Macintosh" by Katherine Ulrich.
This book is great...a very nice balance of text and images. The tutorials are cleanly written, in simple steps, and are nicely structured. The "Visual Quickstart" series of books from Peachpit press would be my first choice in order to learn any new program.
They've also got books for many other applications. (Note: they now have an updated version of the above book for flash version 5, and an advanced version for those who want to get into more intricate work.)
If you're keen to start learning a new program, I strongly advise you to use one in the quickstart series. In your zeal you may be tempted to try something like the "Bible" books. My experience with the Flash Bible was pretty grim... some of the passages were a real mess; one of the writers seemed more interested in showing off his expertise than sharing it with the reader. Important passages were buried between unnecessary illustrations and redundant text. Welcome to ugly-town. I don't know if any of the other books in the Bible series are as bad, but I don't intend to find out.
Nothing will discourage you faster than a badly written paperweight.
This is just a preliminary page: I'll be adding more to it soon.
